Tour Description

Enjoy a great day discovering the countryside of Rome!

Want to do something away from the madness and crowds of Rome? Something in the countryside, with picturesque hilltop villages and maybe a little wine tasting?  Look no further, our private shore excursion to the Roman countryside & Castelli Romani from Civitavecchia is just the ticket.

Features of this day trip to the Roman countryside & Castelli Romani:The Castelli Romani (literally, Roman Castles), a collection of hill top villages around Lake Albano and Lake Nemi, have always been synonymous with great food and simplicity.  In the olden days, citizens of Rome would come here on the weekends, buying food along the way and enjoying it with local wine in a tavern.  Today the area is best known for Castel Gandolfo, the summer residence of the Pope, the area is one of great natural beauty.

Our tour begins with a drive through lush farmlands and rolling hills dotted with handsome villas.  We’ll visit the following villages, each one with its own particular charm and food specialties.  If you like we can finish the day with a wine tasting.

ARICCIA

In stately Piazza di Corte of Ariccia, designed in the late 17th Century by some of the greatest architects of the period (Bernini being among them), you’ll have the chance to taste typical local products such as porchetta, or simply linger in the old town, enjoying the surroundings.

GENZANO DI ROMA

Genzano is best known for its bread, pane casareccio di Genzano, and for the Infiorata Festival. During this event the streets of Genzano are decorated with flowers arranged in mosaics, creating a spectacular floral carpet on the sloping pavement. This tradition goes back to the 17th century as part of the celebration of Corpus Domini.

NEMI

After going around Lake Nemi we will arrive at the village of Nemi.  The best-preserved town of the Castelli Romani, Nemi is enjoyed by simply walking around and immersing oneself in its country atmosphere. Here you will have a chance to taste Fragolino, a local liqueur made from the wild strawberries that have made the village noteworthy. These wild strawberries are also used to make jam and other delicacies.

CASTEL GANDOLFO

On the way to Castel Gandolfo we’ll drive around scenic Lake Albano, which is actually the flooded remains of two volcanic craters,  The placid town of Castel Gandolfo, where the Pope historically retreats in the summer to escape the heat of Rome, is packed with historic sites.  Take a short stroll in this lovely medieval town and shoot some photos of the panoramic views and the papal palace.

FRASCATI

Dominated by spectacular Villa Aldobrandini. Frascati is renowned for its wine production.  A wine tasting with snacks is optional (approx. 20-25 Euro per person).
